Sermon: At the Name of Jesus

Text: “The people were amazed and asked each other, ‘What is this? A new teaching? Who is this who even has authority over evil spirits?’” –Mark 1:27

Old Testament: Deuteronomy 18:15-19

Gospel: Mark 1:21-28

In the Upper Room devotional material a man named Dean tells the story of one of his most unforgettable childhood memories. He was five years old, and it was a hot, dusty August day in rural Tennessee. As always, the minister’s sermon went on and on and the slight breeze coming through the open windows did little to cool the sanctuary. Dean remembers the women fanning themselves and the gentle sounds of the ceiling fan and the ticking of the clock on the back wall.
